Water Management

Following the completion of the extensive modernisation of the Hranice cement plant in 1992, water consumption was drastically reduced by changing the technology from wet to dry clinker firing. 

However, the system of surface water storage tanks on the cement plant site was retained. These reservoirs, in addition to providing water for the cement plant's technology, perform other important water management functions, namely balancing the flow in the small watercourse of Račí Creek, where the captured water in times of surplus performs the function of subsidising the watercourse in times of shortage. As a result, the Račí Creek does not dry up between June and September. Another important function is the flood protection of the town of Hranice for the lower residential areas around the watercourse of Račí Creek. The abstracted surface water is mainly used in the technology of the cement plant for cooling the flue gas after the rotary kiln heat exchanger or for cooling the rotary kiln technology and the cement mills. However, this water is subsequently returned to nature in the form of evaporation.
