Reducing CO2 emissions

The cement and other minerals sector in the Czech Republic accounts for about five percent of total CO2-equivalent greenhouse gas emissions. Cement production generates basic processCO2 emissions from the decomposition of limestone and fuel CO2 emissions from the combustion of fuels in the rotary kiln system during clinker firing. 

Our cement plant has succeeded in reducing fossil CO2 emissions by about 40% in 2023 compared to 1990 due to many technological and process changes in cement production.

In general, there are several options for reducing CO2 emissions. These include:

  • the use of alternative fuels
  • improving the thermal efficiency of the rotary kiln system
  • optimization of the raw material mix by using decarbonized raw materials in the preparation for clinker firing in terms of appropriate chemical composition
  • application of blended cements and development of alternative cements with lower clinker content,
  • the use of renewable electricity and the challenge for the future is the use of low-emission hydrogen (own photovoltaic power plant with an installed capacity of 858.36 kW - the sun thus helps in the production of clinker)
  • CO2 capture, storage and processing, i.e. the abbreviation used for CCS/CCU technology and our company is involved in the preparation and development of future CCS/CCU strategies and potential opportunities within the Czech Republic and the EU.
